American Baptist Theological Seminary’s Oldest Lecture Series
The Garnett-Nabrit Lecture Series stands as a testament to the exemplary leadership and enduring legacy of James Henry Garnett and James Madison Nabrit at the American Baptist Theological Seminary. Dr. Garnett, who served as a teacher of Systematic Theology and New Testament Greek from 1924 to 1938, later assumed the role of Dean from 1927 to 1939, and during the period from 1930 to 1932, he provided vital leadership as the acting president.
On the other hand, James Madison Nabrit, the President of the American Baptist Theological Seminary from 1936 to 1944, orchestrated a transformative eight-year tenure that significantly advanced the institution. His visionary leadership gave rise to the development of the National Baptist Training School for Christian Workers.
Both Garnett and Nabrit emerged as landmarks in the annals of American Baptist College, exemplifying innovation and integrity. In recognition of their profound influence, the Garnett-Nabrit Lecture Series was established to annually honor their contributions to the institution.
The origins of the lecture series can be traced back to the early initiatives led by Dr. J.C. Miles, under the guidance of President J.M. Nabrit. The first Missionary Conference in March 1937 and the Annual Conference on Pastoral Problems in November 1937 laid the foundation for the eventual amalgamation of conferences by 1943, continuing until 1957.
The formal conception of the Garnett-Nabrit Lectures took shape in 1949, as alumni across the nation expressed overwhelming support for the idea. However, it was not until 1957 that the lectures were officially established. In a pivotal meeting of the Board of Trustees on April 30 to May 1, 1957, the decision was made to rename the Annual Ministers and Missionary Conference to the Garnett-Nabrit Lectures in honor of the esteemed former dean Dr. J.H. Garnett and the fourth President of the Seminary, Dr. J.M. Nabrit.
The inaugural Garnett-Nabrit Lecture Series took place on April 30 to May 1, 1958, under the co-directorship of Professor Joseph M. Conley and Dr. Maynard P. Turner, who served as President in 1964. The Lecture Series was further strengthened by the Alumni Association, introducing an Alumni Banquet where each year, a distinguished alumnus delivers the keynote address, adding to the richness of this esteemed annual event. The Garnett-Nabrit Lecture Series thus continues to be a vibrant and integral part of the American Baptist Theological Seminary's tradition, celebrating the legacy of two remarkable leaders.
